The Portland Thorns entered the international break with seven players departing to join their respective national teams, representing the United States, Canada, Mexico, Denmark and Portugal.
The United States duo of Sam Coffey and Sophia Smith competed in a series of friendlies against South Korea, while Janine Beckie and Jessie Fleiming with Canada and Reyna Reyes with Mexico faced one another in two friendly matches. Finally, Isabella Obaze and Denmark, along with Ana Dias with Portugal continued qualification matches for the upcoming 2025 UEFA Women’s Championship.
Sam and Sophia Soar with United States
The United States cruised to back-to-back shutout wins under the new leadership of Head Coach Emma Hayes. Smith and Coffey played vital roles in both victories, with the duo starting in the first match and coming off the bench in the second. Smith contributed to goals in both games, assisting Mallory Swanson on the first goal in the first game, while also scoring the second goal of the night in the second match. Midfielder Olivia Moultrie also attended the camp as a training player.
Janine and Jessie Put in a Shift for Canada
In Canada’s final two matches before the upcoming Summer Olympics, Thorns Beckie and Fleming helped their country earn two results against their Concacaf foe, Mexico. The Canadian duo started in both matches, finishing with a 2-0 victory and a 1-1 draw.
Reyna Gets the Start for Mexico
Facing off against her fellow Portland teammates, defender Reyes started in back-to-back matches for Mexico, contributing to the team’s 1-1 draw with Canada.
Obaze Competes with Denmark
In their quest to qualify for the 2025 UEFA Women’s Championship, Denmark faced Spain in the second round of matches within Group 2A. Obaze did not appear in either of the 2-0 and 3-2 losses to Spain, available on the bench for both matches. With their previous two victories over Belgium and Czech Republic, Denmark is now in second place, behind Spain, with six points. The two top finishers in Group 2A will automatically qualify for the 2025 UEFA Women’s Championship.
Ana Dias Returns to Portugal
Like her Portland teammate, Obaze, Ana Dias and Portugal competed in two matches in 2025 UEFA Women’s Championship Qualification. Portugal, competing in group 2B, entered the second round of matches in first place of their group with wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Malta. During this round of qualification, Portugal earned consecutive wins over Northern Ireland with Dias coming off the bench in the 4-0 and 2-1 victories.
The Portland Thorns return to National Women’s Soccer League regular season play on Saturday, June 8, hosting North Carolina Courage for Pride Night at 7pm PT.
