Portland Thorns Fall to Seattle Reign in Penalties

Goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold returns to play for the first time since May, records regulation clean sheet.

PORTLAND, Ore. (Saturday, July 26, 2025) – After finishing scoreless in regulation time, Portland Thorns fell to Seattle Reign FC 5-4 in a penalty shootout on Saturday night at Providence Park.

The first half was an intense battle between two sides itching to strike first, with the Thorns offense putting most of the shots to pressure the Reign backline.

In instances where the Reign threatened in the box, the Thorns backline denied Seattle major opportunities, including an impressive quick drop save in the 30th minute from Portland goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold who returned on the pitch for the Thorns for the first time since she sustained a leg injury back in May.

Both sides made several changes throughout the second half to break the deadlock, but each attacking effort was thwarted by both teams’ respective defenses. In the end, the match winner would be decided from the spot in a penalty shootout.

Portland would convert its first three shots before Seattle goalkeeper Claudia Dickey blocked Thorns defender Reyna Reyes’ effort.

Arnold would respond back for Portland with a big save of her own by keeping out Reign’s Ainsley McCammon. However, Dickey would block Portland defender Daiane’s shot in sudden death to secure the win for Seattle.

Despite the scoreline, the match saw lots of involvement from every member of the Thorns roster as they continue preparations for the return of NWSL action next Sunday at Washington Spirit.

As the mentality shifts toward Washington, there’s no doubt that tonight’s match will also serve as learning material two weeks from now when Portland once again hosts Seattle for the regular season reverse fixture on Sunday, August 10. Tickets for the Cascadia Rivalry game at Providence Park are still available at thorns.com/tickets.
