Portland Thorns FC acquire Mexico goalkeeper Emily Alvarado in trade with Houston Dash

Portland Thorns FC have acquired Mexico National Team goalkeeper Emily Alvarado from the Houston Dash in exchange for $35,000 in allocation, as well as up to $50,000 in Intra-League Transfer Funds or Allocation Money if certain performance metrics are met. Alvarado will be available for the Thorns’ upcoming match against Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, April 27 at 4:30pm PT.

Alvarado, 25, comes to Portland after just one full season in Houston where she served as backup to the 2023 Goalkeeper of the Year, Jane Campbell. While she did not make her National Women’s Soccer League debut, she did appear in two matches during the 2023 Challenge Cup, during which she made seven combined saves against Racing Louisville and Kansas City Current.

Prior to joining the NWSL, Alvarado played two seasons in France with Stade de Reims where she earned 39 out of a possible 40 starts, contributing to nine clean sheets while making more than 150 saves.

Alvarado made her senior Mexico National Team debut on May 26, 2019 against the United States. Since then, Alvarado has appeared in 12 additional matches for Mexico. Before advancing to the senior level, Alvarado won the 2013 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship and the 2018 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship where she was awarded the Golden Glove.

The Portland Thorns are set to face Alvarado’s former squad, the Houston Dash, tonight at Providence Park with kickoff set for 7:00pm PT. The match is available for viewers on ION, local channel 22.
