Asman was selected 39th overall, in the third round, of the 2024 NWSL Draft by the Thorns after a five-year career at Penn State

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC have signed 2024 NWSL Draft pick out of Penn State, Kat Asman, to a one-year contract with a mutual second-year option.

“We are thrilled to officially have Kat on our team, and we are excited for what she will bring to our team and to the GK union. Goalkeepers have always been an important part of our club, Kat is a great fit for us and we look forward to seeing her grow this year,” General Manager and President of Soccer Operations Karina LeBlanc said.

Asman, 23, was selected 39th overall, in the third round, of the 2024 NWSL Draft by the Thorns after a five-year career at Penn State, where she served as the Nittany Lions’ starting goalkeeper in four of the five years. As Penn State’s goalkeeper, Asman made 323 saves in 87 matches, contributing to 27 shutouts.

“Kat has come into what is a young goalkeeper group with a great maturity about herself, she is very driven, hungry and humble. We feel that she is the perfect fit for our group,” Head Coach Mike Norris said. “We are excited to see how she continues to develop while still challenging Lauren and Shelby.”

As a member of the Nittany Lions, Asman has competed in the NCAA Tournament in each of her five years, making it to the Round of 16 in four consecutive seasons from 2018-2022. Asman is now the third former Penn State athlete to appear on this year’s Thorns FC squad, joining midfielder Sam Coffey and fellow rookie Payton Linnehan.

The Thorns will begin the National Women’s Soccer League regular season on March 16 against Kansas City Current at CPKC Stadium before returning to Providence Park on March 24 for the home opener against NJ/NY Gotham FC, tickets for which are on sale now.
