The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) today announced that Portland Thorns FC midfielder Sam Coffey and forward Sophia Smith were named to the NWSL Best XI of the Month, presented by Prime, for the months of May by the NWSL Media Association and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent. It marks the second time this season Smith has earned Best XI of the Month honors, and the sixth overall throughout her career. Meanwhile, this is Coffey’s first time earning Best XI honors this season and the sixth overall.
During the month of May Coffey started in each of the team’s five matches, playing every moment of the possible 450 minutes. Coffey scored her second goal of the season during the month, launching a rocket of a shot in the fourth minute against the Washington Spirit, leading to Portland’s eventual 2-1 victory.
Smith started in four of the Thorns’ five matches in May, leading the team with three goals and four assists, while earning victories in each of the four games she appeared in. The forward now leads the league’s Golden Boot race with eight goals and six assists.
The NWSL Best XI of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent.
